Coastal Minimalist
April 14, 2026
Minimalism is your style; with a hint of ocean breeze. You love coastal décor, but you don’t want a lot of things on your horizontal surfaces. You want a clean coastal look, few knicknacks. How do you do that? Easy.
Start with the overall picture: do you want to use a pale blue paint on the walls (or floors), or do you want to go with a sun-bleached look on your wooden or wood-look floors? That’s the first decision. Let’s say you decide to go with the sun-bleached floor. Add a couch that fits your style – something sleek, modern, no frills; perhaps metal legs. What color? That’s up to you. The ocean has many colors in it, from fish and coral to sea glass and other things that brush against your legs as you swim so it’s your choice. There’s a sleek wooden coffee table, two end tables and two occasional chairs; white sconces are on the walls on either side of the fireplace, but the rest of the lighting is recessed into the ceiling. Doesn’t sound too coastal so far, does it? Add a large seashell painting, like this halved nautilus that’s 40” by 30”; this 40” by 40” conch shell, or on the biggest wall; or a heron triptych on the longest wall (over your sofa?), and that will take care of the walls. If you wish, add some conch cabinet knobs on the side tables or coffee table. Voila! You have a coastal minimalist living room! Everyone will get the idea. You don’t have to go overboard (pardon the pun) with it; a hint, or a bold statement are both good choices. The key is to not over- or under-do it. The three things: the big picture on the wall, cabinet knobs and the sun-bleached flooring will tell everyone all that they need to know, tastefully and minimally.

Easy to do in the living room, but what about in the kitchen where there are a lot of cabinets and drawers to put knobs on, and a lot of horizontal surfaces that could hold a lot of things and it’s so easy to get a little swept away in the tide with the ideas? Or in the bathroom: what about that?
For the kitchen, go with a pale blue cabinet color, or a watery backsplash. A white tile on the floor or a pale countertop would be good. Decorate a single corner of your countertop in an out of the way place with a grouping of three shorebirds, and put coastal pulls on the cabinet doors, but regular knobs on the drawers (or vice versa) in a similar look. On your cabinets you don’t have to have everything the same, but similarities are good; make it your own. If you don’t want to do cabinet knobs as your third thing, find a place to put a big seashell to put your keys, mail, or snacks in. Or, you could even go with a refrigerator in a Morning Blue color.

In the bathroom, a white vanity and sink, light blue towels, sand dollar cabinet knobs, and a metal shorebird on the wall does the trick. That’s all you need. It’s not overpowering, but it’s enough to tell people you love the coast and would love to be sitting on the beach, toes in sand, sun on your face and a good book being glanced at every now and then when you can pry your eyes off the ocean.
Coastal minimalist décor is possible. It can be combined into something beautiful, and beautifully simple. Don’t over-think it. The hints are enough.
